Definition and units
Indicator FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG reports the annual percentage change in a consumer price index. It measures the rate at which the average cost of the covered basket changes, not the price level itself.
Level: Six percent means the index is about 6% above the prior annual value; it does not mean prices fell when inflation later drops to 3%.
Comparability: Basket weights, coverage and national methods can differ.
Availability: Latest years may differ because the API reflects publication lags and revisions.
What this indicator cannot tell you
Headline CPI is an average. Personal inflation depends on the goods, housing arrangements and location of a household; the series also does not identify the cause of a price change.
Try it yourself
If nominal wages rise 4% while consumer prices rise 6%, compare the approximation −2% with the exact real change, 1.04 / 1.06 − 1.
Source and retrieval
The chart requests live World Bank data and stores no fixed snapshot. Use the API response example, indicator page, and metadata definition. Record the retrieval date and displayed year when citing a value.
