Definition and units

World Bank indicator EN.GHG.CO2.PC.CE.AR5 reports annual carbon dioxide emissions from agriculture, energy, waste and industrial sectors, excluding land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), divided by population. Values are metric tons of CO2 equivalent per person.

Per person: The denominator supports a different comparison from national totals; it is not an individual's measured footprint.

Territorial sectors: Excluding LULUCF removes a component with larger estimation uncertainty but also narrows the emissions boundary.

Availability: Inventory data are revised and lag current events; always use the actual year shown.

Indicator revision

The earlier World Bank code EN.ATM.CO2E.PC is now archived and no longer returns observations from the live API. This page moved to the current WDI series on 9 October 2026. The two series should not be spliced without checking their source and methodology differences.

What this indicator cannot tell you

It does not allocate embodied emissions in trade, include LULUCF, measure every greenhouse gas, establish historical responsibility or show inequality within countries. A cross-country difference is descriptive, not an estimate of a policy effect.

Analysis task

Compare one displayed per-capita value with a separately sourced national total. Explain why the rankings answer different questions, and record both indicator codes and years.

Source and retrieval

The page requests live World Bank observations and stores no fixed snapshot. See the API response example, indicator page, and API metadata. World Bank metadata identifies EDGAR/JRC as the source organization. Cite the displayed year and retrieval date.
